RE: Broadband speed question

'For Telephone Number XXXXX XXXXXX on Exchange XXXXXXXXX
The checker indicates that BT Broadband is available in your area, and
that
you SHOULD BE ABLE to receive it.

Effectively, there are GREEN and RED regions where you'll definitely be
able/not be able to get BB, and also the AMBER region where you might!

But the preliminary check on your line suggests that you are on the
limit of
being able to receive service because of the distance between you and
your
local exchange.
When you place an order, we will perform a further test on your line to
make
sure that your line is suitable.'

The Line Test Information is routinely (about once a month if I remember
rightly) updated to reflect the line quality (length inferred from
electrical characteristics etc).  Either through a phone call to a
helpful operator, a request for service or through a helpful engineer,
you can get the more accurate detailed Line Test initiated (about 20
seconds duration) which should give a definitive answer.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that the Rate Adaptive ADSL flavour
comes in here, and if it's acceptable, you'll effectively get the same
downstream speed, but potentially lower upstream speeds.

Is there anyone on the list who has broadband and is in the same sort of
position in relation to there exchange? I did ring BT and they did tell
me
that if I can get it I will get the same speed regardless of where I am
living in relation to the exchange, but I'm just looking for some
unbiased
reassurance.

I haven't got ADSL (not for want of trying - 4 years and counting now),
and am just within reach of a small exchange, but currently there's 14
other registrations for my exchange!
