So the displays are connected in a daisy chain to the controller?

BTW, having the controller gets back to the single point of failure that ppl
don't seem to like.
If you're going to have a PC to set up the thing, and going to have the
single point of failure anyway then why go to the expense and trouble of
building and programming the controller when you may as well just use the PC
for the whole shooting match?

I agree with your KISS philosophy though and not trying to define everything
all at once....
