On the subject of "Screen Burn" on VFD's.....

BT used to sell a phone system in some areas called the "Septara"
and the
phones had VFD displays.

During the night it would send test patterns to the display to use all
segments on the display so that some segments didnt appear brighter than
others.

You could have a "Night Rider" mode that would bounce things
backwards and
forwards across the display when the alarm was set.
