I've used one of the small motors with reduction gearbox from CPC, MF64493
to automate the doors on my projector housing, simple shaft off of the
gearbox with cords which wind up. If you fitted something like this above a
top hinged flap you could easily open and close it. The output is very
powerful, you cannot stall the motor by hand, it takes about 5 seconds for
the doors to my projector to open.

CPC also do a simple 12v motor speed controller if you needed to slow things
up even more.
