10m might be pushing it, although I've never tried.
Serial would be better as I believe you can go upto about 30m. I have run serial over unshielded CAT5 at about 20m for such things as a Palm cradle & LCD display.
Also, if you are running W2K or XP be advised that accessing the printer port directly can be problematic.

what is the longest run you can have for the pararrel port ? 10m ?

i need a PC controllable board with switches (relays), they do not need to be high powered
at all as i just need them to switch speaks on and off.   
 
anyone recommend a suitable piece of kit ? does cpc do one ?
