RE: Linux ....grrrr!

Hi Steve,

Yes I was logged in as root.
I got a bit further by replacing the video card with an old ATI MAch64
(ATI's always work according to someone on the list recently).
Got to X setup and try as I might, it did not like one or both of the card
and the monitor (An Iiyama AS4431D LCD).
Even setting it to 640 x 480 at 60hz didn't work - though it supports 1280 x
1024 @ 75Hz.  Still got a v.wobbly piccie.
Gave up fiddling on the monitor side and changed the card to generic
unlisted card @ 640 x 480 and I got a stable piccie - hurrah!
Stupidly said that was okay rather than trying another resolution so the
setup finished and told me to reboot to get into my new linux system.
Rebooted and......
X is obviously starting up coz I get an almost blank screen (white/gray
backgroupd) with a cursor I can move which switches beterrn a X and an input
caret (][) like I'm hovering over a text box (eg to put in my username).
Unfortunately this are of the screen covers the lower 3'rd and obviously
falls off the bottom of the physical screen, so I can't see what (if
anything) it's asking me and I can't see anything if I type.
It's like the rez on the monitor is set v.v.v.v.low and is a window on a
v.v.v.v.high res desktop.  And no, moving the cursor to the edge of the
screen doesn't make the screen scroll across the virtual desktop, so clearly
X doesn't think there is a problem.

At this point I unplugged the machine and dumped it in the corner.
Grrr.....

Tony
