You are trying to do all this from root arnt you?
Cuase IIRC if you're not logged in as root, or su'd to root, then some
commands are similarly just not found. Instead of a permision denied
message, becuase the path isnt in a normal users path variable.

Be in root next time you try any of the commands we've suggested, but
if
your already in root...
