Just a thought...  Why not send:

B1R11xxx100 - if 0=OFF, 1=ON and x=NoChange

and this is interpreted as Board 1 : R1=OFF, R2=OFF, R3=ON, R4=NoChange,
R5=NoChange, R6=NoChange, R7=ON, R8=ON.

Then have the board return something like

B1R11010100-OK (Assuming that R4, R5 and R6 were originally set as OFF, ON,
OFF respectively.

This way you get Status, Grouping _and_ individual control.

Jon

Right. So, if I made the first version to support:
B1R1On - Board one, relay one turn on
B1R1Off - Board one, relay one turn off
B1R2On - Board one, relay two turn on
B1R2Off - Board one, relay two turn off
etc. etc. up to eight

The unit would return
B1R1OnOK
B1R1OffOK
etc. etc. up to eight again

Any grouping, timers and other fancy stuff would be initially controlled by
the PC end. As I said earlier getting the fancy bits in will come later e.g.
timers. Here I am also thinking of a PC independent unit that operates stand
alone for irrigation control etc. I could even make it remember the state it
was in if there was a power cut or something. Again, initially the board
number would be hard coded but later I will make it so it can be programmed.
I would use either 9600 or 19200 as the serial speed.

Cool or what!!

Ian
