Stuart,
I've used several usb drives, under windows only. below win 2K they needed a
driver, whether such has been written for linux I do not know. I may be able
to test one of mine on linux tommorow night if it'd help.

You'd have to stick to FAT rather than NTFS or unix specific format at a
guess
