Free Lossless Audio Codec. Whereas MP3 is a lossy codec,FLAC is 
lossless.Of course, the file size is way bigger, for example 70% of 
the original wave file but with hard drive prices falling, its not 
prohibitive.

I expect to have a mixture of MP3 files for tracks ripped from the 
internet and FLAC files for my favourite music where the lossless 
file being put through my main hi-fi system will be preferred option.
