Rabbit core is around 30quid in one-off quantities.
It needs a 7805 voltage regulator and MAX232 serial current pump (or
equivalent) to interface to the display.
The display came from www.seetron.com. LCDs start at around USD40,
the VFD's range from USD 90-120. The MP3 project chaps reckon they
can source VFDs from the manufacturer for aroung GBP 67.
... and that's all there is to it.

If anyone fancies doing a PCB run (Ian?) for the rabbit core + serial
interface + power supply, that would be great - it's a very simple
board but it would find a myriad of uses beyond the display project.

Over the next day or two, I will add a XAP plugin to driver the VFD
direct from a PC port too, as an alternative to the rabbit interface.
