Well you could still send the heartbeat to indicate you're alive. Esp
useful in a windows environment I think :-)

Configuring a desktop app is less of an issue in anycase - this is
really aimed at the devices which have no sensible UI.

You shouldn't have any cause to include embedded STX/ETX's in your
message body anyway!

PS. I'm not ignoring the various requests for source code, I just
have some other stuff I have to do first. (Including recovery of a
node0 server which has inexplicably lost its network i/f. Seems it's
the same every summer...)
