Title: [ukha_d] Re: ADSL Contention Ratios and Reality
Erm.. except 1:1 ISN'T the same as a leased line...

Unlike a leased line, 1:1 ADSL is still Asymmetric (that's what the A in ADSL stands for). Asymmetric in the sense of "upload speed not nearly as fast as download speed."

Therefore, while you might have a 512k _download_ on a 512k, you would probably have a 64-128k UPLOAD speed.

If your aim is to give your users web access, then 1:1 ADSL is a good idea (service level arguments notwithstanding). If your aim, however, is to host services such as a web site, then it's a BAD idea, since users coming into your website will see it as a 64-128k connection, not a 512k one.

Regards,

Mark

1:! = a leased line but remember most adsl don't offer SLA's.  The
bandwidth is not physically allocated although on a 512k adsl you
should
get 62kb/s throughput.

Thanx chris

For another 600 quid a year you can have an SLA on the LLU product,
but they are only doing certain exchnges and guess what, I aint on
one of them lol
