Hi Ben,

The standard digital interface can only go about 0.5 - 0.7m without
problems. To go longer you need to convert the signals to LVDS or Panel
Link
as it is generally referred to when talking about LCD digital
interfaces.
Advantech to a transmitter and receiver that converts the signals to
Panel
Link that can drive up to about 10m on special cables. The cables for
this
length tend to be expensive, but lower cost for shorter lengths.

Go to www.advantech.com and search for Panel Link or LVDS. Some of their
CPU
cards have built in LVDS transmitters. I have just ordered a couple of
sample panel link receiver IC's from National Semiconductor to try and
build
my own interface for the board that I have.

If the LCD you plan to use has a standard VGA input, then you will be OK
for
a couple of metres as per the lead that normally comes with the PC
monitor.
This tends to add a fair bit to the cost of the LCD for the VGA interface
of
around 150-200 quid. A panel link tx and rx is around the 50-60 quid
area
each.

Do you have any idea how far away the screen can be mounted from the
computer?  I'm trying to find some way of using networked PCs with
a
nice wall-mount to play CDs and radio (not off the web) in lots of
rooms.   The PC's digital output would then go into a local (dig)
amp
for a high-quality room hi-fi with a much better user interface than
things like Linn (and cheaper) - plus it would do other things as
well.  If that screen can be mounted a couple of metres away from
the
PC, then this might be a good solution.
