If memory serves me correctly (and I haven't checked but) the TSOP or
similar IR sensor is connected directly to the serial port. Using a power
supply, some resistors and transistors it should be easy enough to get a
long cable run. Haven't tested (or thought) this so there may be a flaw but
it seems simple on the face of it.
