Those "ridiculously large" yellow plugs are designed not to pull out
accidentally and to carry the large currents that operating at low
voltages demand and to do so for a long time without spot welding
themselves together. They are also designed to resist impacts and - to a
certain extent - water ingress.

I doubt little of the regulations had anything to do with the tool
manufacturers themselves and I reckon that the domestic market really
could benefit from a lot of the things that are taken as part of
everyday life in the professional arena. Locking power and signal
connectors being just one thing!
