Hi Dan
I do this at home, using a scanner made by visioneer, its a sheet fed
scanner, about the size of an empty kitchen roll tube.
I use this with a piece of software called "Paperport" as it
offe=
rs very
good compression, and you don't have to faf around setting it up.
To scan you simply push the piece of paper into the scanner, the
software
starts up and scans the page, each page is scanned in around 10
seconds.
http://www.visi=
oneer.com/products/sheetfed.html this is the scanner, it
comes complete with software, for around =A3150 - =A3200, I brought mine

om
Insight.
If you want any further info let me know.

Subject: [ukha_d] New HA Project - Electronic Filer
Hi Guys,
Apart from a few bits of cabling still to be done, I have the seeds of
a
new HA project for my kitchen. I've always wanted an excuse to put a
=
PC
or terminal in the kitchen, but have had trouble justifying this to the
missus, as a recipe DB and barcode scanner have not really cut the
mustard.
So, my latest plan is an "Electronic Filer" that consists mainly
=
of an
automatic doc scanner and a touch screen interface (with custom UI) so
that any letters/bills that come in can simply be dropped into the
scanner to be scanned and then the user presses a few buttons on the
display to choose a folder to file in - simple and saves our piles of
paper sitting in various places not getting filed. The entire
operati=
on
should literally take seconds to scan, seconds to file.
The obvious benefit of this being in the kitchen is that letters can be
scanned after they are opened in the morning. Also, once the doc
is
scanned, there are lots of options to do things like OCR-ing and full
text indexing in the background (if necessary).
Ideally I need a small scanner that will scan when it detects a doc
inserted and a reasonably priced touchscreen. Any ideas on these
item=
s?
Anyone heard of scanning software that sounds useful for this task - or
even a simple scanning API so I can do it myself? Has anyone
played
around with any sort of Twain SDKs or similar?
My server room (i.e. utility room) is next to the kitchen and already
runs two servers so I could simply extend the display/input from one of
these into the kitchen.
Better still, has anyone else accomplished this in their own house?
Any help gratefully appreciated.
-Dan
