Video Server, was [OT] Interesting HD article

Hi Phil,

I like the idea of the video server. SWMBO would also like this as I could<= BR> get rid of all my hoard of video tapes :o)

I was thinking of this idea with my mate the other day saying we should loo= k
at a way of putting all my video collection onto hard disk and run a server=
for it. With the price of disks being reasonably low and a decent setup thi= s
should be possible to build and add to as your collection increases.

Regards
Dave...

> Yeah right, until you get a bargain on the new 1Tb drives ;-)

Has anyone else noticed that it has gone very quiet on the hard disc
front recently? It used to be (or at least seemed to be) that everyone
was pushing for more data and faster access but since Maxtor brought out the 160Gb (what - six months ago?) there hasn't been another hike in
capacity yet the price of the 160Gb drives is now down to =A31/Gb (ex
VAT).

Usually the price of the "flagship" drives remains high - take th= e price
of 40/48Gb 2.5" drives as an example, they were =A3380ish until the release of the 60Gb 2.5" drives and suddenly =A3200 was wiped off thei= r
price overnight.

I just can't help wondering why the price of the 160Gb drives is coming
down without anything to fill that =A3250 - =A3300 "high end" IDE= drive
position.

Of course in a couple of years who knows what will be out? I was looking yesterday and for =A3800 you can get 640Gb of storage - 11 years ago I
paid a similar amount (which was a half price "bargain" as I knew=
someone at Fujitsu) for what then the absoloutely biggest drive on the
market - 173Mb! That's an increase of 4,000 times roughly...

...now, when are those 1Tb drives due? I feel a video server coming on!

Phil
