Andy,

I agree about the X-10 wall switches, I have just bought one of the
new AWM2 modules that I hope to retrofit either behind my existing
switches or near the ceiling rose, just need a neutral wire from the
light. If you can lift the floor above then it shouldn't be too much
of a problem.

These people do corded poles so all you have to do is add a motor

They also do bespoke poles so they may have come across this problem
already :)
