Provided your player has got the latest 2.whatever version of the software,
you can perform manual recordings on Tivo without requiring a subscription,
>from pretty much like a conventional VCR. I know this because BT killed our
phone line in between the "I'm alive" initial Tivo phone call and the
"initial download of EPG data before subscribing" call - meaning I had an
unsubscribed Tivo with no EPG data for a few days.

However, I wouldn't fancy using a Tivo with a big hard drive in this way -
the "Now Playing" list has no idea what any of the programmes are, so
simply displays the date/time/channel of each recording - finding what you
want from a big list could be interesting.

Kevin,

There are several threads on the Tivo forum, regarding manual recording
confirming that it is not possible to do manual records if you subscription
has expired.  There is one thread though that contradicts this saying the
'aerial' channels could still be recorded. Although unless you don't have a
subscription you can't test this !!!
