It uses a hardware chip identity on the motherboard AFAIK it does not use CLI - I have moved Tivos around no problem

How does a TiVo authenticate to the service.
 
If it's:
 
    Some ID hard-wired into the TiVo, that's fine
    Some username/password, that's fine
    CLI on the user's phone number, that'd be bad, since I want to move it between phone lines ;-)
 
What I _want_ is a TiVo that updates over the Internet (by presenting an Ethernet port), rather than a phone line .....
