DVD Ripping
This is for windows but Linuxboys can figure it out the differences for
themselves as they have set linux up (something I can't get to work)
Well here goes:
This looks long and tedious but its not (max clicking time = 5 mins, the
rest is CPU time)
First you need the following:
FlaskMpeg : http://www.flaskmpeg.net/download/flaskmpeg_0594.exe
DivX codecs: http://home.wanadoo.nl/ruud.szwajcer/codec.zip
Audio codecs: http://home.wanadoo.nl/ruud.szwajcer/MPradium.zip
SmartRipper:
http://www.mpegx.com/download.asp?url=http://q-berts.org/dvd/ripper/smart.ex
e
Bit Rate Calculator: http://home.wanadoo.nl/ruud.szwajcer/AdvBitR.zip
Before you start ripping make sure you have at least 6gig free space
Unpack and install all the above files into sub directories of a common
directory (e.g. DVD-Rip\Flask DVD-Rip\DivX DVD-Rip\Audio
DVD-Rip\SmartRipper DVD-Rip\Calculator) Reboot after installing them all.
Now to get the vob files onto your hard drive without codes in:
Open up SmartRipper
It will take a bit of time to check the DVD but everything should go ok -
if
not just open up a DVD player to unlock the files and start again
Click on Files
You will find the following files on your DVD:
..BUP - The *.bup file is a index file of the dvd
..IFO - This is a file to play the chapters of the movie in the right
order
..VOB - Contains image, sound and subtitles.
Look at which .VOB files are the ones over 1gig eg (VTS_26_0VOB 1.048.544
KB)
Select all the ones that have the beginning bit the same as the ones over a
gig eg VTS_26_0VOB , VTS_26_1VOB , VTS_26_2VOB ... Etc
Basically in this example VTS_26 is the movie, the rest are extras.
So now that all the VOB files are selected also select the IFO and BUP
files
At the bottom of SmartRipper these is a "Target" choose where you
want to
store the ripped DVD (make sure the "free diskspace bit turns green or
else
you won't have enough space to do it)
Now press the decrypt button (this can take up to 45 mins so be patient)
What you have now is all the movie files including the audio on your hard
drive with no codes.
Open up FlaskMPEG
Choose File, Open Media, and select where you put the VOB files from the
previous step
A menu will pop up. Choose the DVD title (usually the first one), Audio ,
and subtitles.
Click on "Flask this DVD!"
Now leave flask minimized for the moment:
Open up your bit rate calculator
What you need to know:
Play length of your DVD
If you want "super quality" (2CD) or "good quality"
(1CD)
Fill in the video length in minutes
Choose 96kBit/s, Stereo for the "Input Sound Rate"
Choose how many Cds and how big they are
In blue you should see what DivX bitrate to use - remember this number when
you go back to FlaskMPEG
Now back in FlaskMPEG:
Choose "Select Output"
Select AVI Output
Choose "Select Output"
Select "Configure Output Module"
Press "Select Video Codec"
Choose "DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Low-Motion" and press
"Configure"
If you can't find DivX you need to reinstall Alpha3.1 and restart
your PC
In the popup choose:
"keyframe every "5" seconds"
"Compression Control "75""
"Data Rate" = the bitrate from the bitrate calculator
Press OK
Now for the audio
Press Select Codec under Audio
Select "MPEG Layer-3"
Select "96 kBit/s, 48,000Hz, Stereo 12KB/s"
Press OK
If that went well you should now have next to video and audio:
selected codec vids.div3
selected codec auds.tag 85 respectively
Nearly there now......
Choose the Width: 720 Height: 576 this gives you 16:9 widescreen (you can
play around with this in a couple of steps on screen)
Choose the timebase according to the region your DVD is from:
Region 1: 29.97
Region 2: 25
Click on "Show output pad"
In the new popup window:
Get rid of as much black as possible as this will only increase the
file size unnecessarily
Get rid of it by copping (play around with this and you will get the
hang: top offset first though)
Now click on "Hide"
The next tab is "Audio"
Leave it like it is with "Decode Audio" and "Same as
input" selected
"Post Processing" tab
Use HQ Bicubic Filtering
keep aspect ratio
"Files" tab
Select where you want the AVI file to be stored
Click Ok, OK
You shouldn't have to touch "Audio Player" unless the audio
levels need
improving
Before you hit the "Flask IT" button close all other programs
including
internet connections or else it will die half way through
Hit it and change the priority to HIGH!
Now don't worry if the time looks like it will take 10 hours (on a PII 400)
or 6 hours (on a PIII 800) this is normal!
Just let it do what it needs to, then wake up the next morning and play it
-
Use windows media player as this will keep the aspect ratio and can be used
in fullscreen mode - some other programs will stretch it to fill the whole
screen - but I am sure you will already have a preference anyway.
If the file is too small (450Mb) it has lost quality and you will need to
re-Flask it for full quality (increase the bit rate by the percentage it is
down from the originally selected CD size) - sorry but this is the only way
I know how
Congratulations you now have a DivX DVD for back-up purposes!
Hope this helps
