It doesn't stop a sleeper from some terrorist group getting a job as an
airline pilot though. Everyone is saying these terrorist must have been
trained pilots because an American pilot wouldn't do such a thing. Another
time those terrorist could well be the official pilots locked safely in
their cabin.
On the computer controlled planes front, as Mark pointed out obvious
hacking risks. You certainly wouldn't want a Microsoft operating system
though, "Sorry your plane has caused an exception. Would anyone of
the
passengers like to have a chance to debugging it or shall I just shut it
down."

I still think totally secure flight decks is a 'reasonable' solution and
doesn't suffer from hacking or any other kind of outside interference.
Nothing else needs to change just stop anyone but the flight crew from
getting into the cockpit while the plane is in flight. As a comparison have
you ever seen a tube or train where the passengers could just stroll into
the drivers cab?
