Hi Simon

The general consensus on the self-build list is that it's
best to use capping in order to prevent the cable getting
damaged by the plasterer.

I know that the regs don't even require the use of capping for
mains cables if they are routed in the areas/ways designated
by the regs.

If I don't use capping I'd have to clip the cable to the wall
using clips/cleats etc.
