I just wish we could gain access to the 16kbits D channel on ISDN ... AKAIK that's permanently active and would be more than enough to allow for many peoples "always on" requirements (email checking) whilst kicking in the B channels when you're actually using the machine itself!

Its not just BT that get upset about permanent connections, its any ISP that uses dialup access. The problem comes from you tying up a port on their rack of modems for long periods of time thereby depriving other users of any access to the system.
 
Its a CATCH 22 situation.
 
1. We WANT to be permanently connected, not neccesarily at a mega fast speed but it would be nice.
 
2. A mechanism exists for permanent connection called ADSL
 
3. Most of us CANT HAVE ADSL either because we live too far away (although Rate Adaptive ADSL should cover a few more people) or like me, live in a town where despite there being in excess of 30,000 customers on the exchange, the exchange has not yet been ADSL enabled and is not on the list of exchanges to be done in 2001/2002  :-(
 
For the providers there is another problem. Many of the people prepared to pay out for ADSL if its available in their area, do so because they are heavy bandwidth users and then hog loads of bandwidth on the backbone.
 
I'm hoping someone will realise that there is a need for permanent connections without a need for high bandwidth, and release an ALWAYS ON 64K or 128K service. At 64K you can fit 32 customers into the space of ONE 2Meg ADSL customer. I'm certain that thousands would leap at the chance of a service like that.
 
Lets hope one materialises soon.
 
What I'm worried about is Winroute Pro.
When I am not using the PC but it is left idle, one or more of the other machines is causing it to connect to the net. After 10 minutes it disconnects, only to connect again 5 minutes later. Drop after 10, connect after 5 etc. During the 10 minute connection there is virtually no data transfer and the "Traffic Cop" at BTI might see that as unattended connection.
 
Anyone know what is causing it?

Not sure how many of you out there are on BT Anytime, but I use it with Home highway to allow me to view the HA camera's and switch X-10 etc on and off when I'm at work. If the connection drops the server simply re-connects, a DNS services makes sure to point to the new IP address. It all works great......
 
I was wondering if any of you out there had received an email the same has shown below ? It would seem that BT do not like me using there Anytime service Anytime I want too ! If anyone as any suggestions I would be interested. I spoke to them on the Telephone for over an hour and have since sent them an email, so I will have to wait to see what happens.
 
Before someone mentions ADSL, I live in a village in Nottinghamshire and they can not provide the service here. I will be moving in March next year and the new address is within range. Having read the recent posts about Sparkies I'm a little concerned, I go to see the builders this weekend to submit my HA wiring details for the new house if the outcome is similar to the other posts I'll let you know !!! :-(   (I will not be able to afford the ADSL after paying the sparkies !)
 
When I spoke to BT it was the inactive times they were concern about, I have since modified the server to go get a few WebPages and throw them away every couple of minutes. That means instead of a line tied up they will have a line tied up and more bandwidth problems. If 1000 people got emails and did the same 64K x 1000 means 64M of backbone bandwidth for data to be destroyed just to keep BT happy ! The server checked for mail every two minutes anyway, I also have a webcam that is live for anyone to view (streaming video with audio), yesterday it took 120 hits so I do not know how they get there inactive figures !
