I though 'pinking' was due to the fuel igniting too soon.  The lead content
slowed/delayed the combustion process (whilst lubricating the valve seats)
which is why you had to retard the ignition when switching earlier (1980s)
vehicles to unleaded.  Some later vehicles had a 'program' plug linked to
the ECU which you reversed to set 95 or 98RON.

Of course, I may be talking complete arse!
