RE: Views on X10 Addressing

I've done something similar to Phil. I've divided the house into
"zones", so upstairs is:

Guiding principle - stick "similar usage" rooms together, and
assume
that the number of devices in a zone will double, so move housecodes as
soon as you get to 8 devices in a zone in your _current_plan_.

Output zones:

A: Master bedroom, en-suite bathroom, dressing room
B: Guest bedroom, my study
C: Library (lots of subtle lighting)
D: "Circulation spaces upstairs" - landing, main bathroom etc...
E: Sitting room (where the home cinema space is going to move, so
lighting control is going to be lots!)
F: Kitchen, dining room and utility room
G: "Circulation spaces downstairs" - hall, W/C

Input zones:

H: The PIRs, irrespective of where they are (each requires two unit
codes.)

I: Is reserved for outside front and garage (intended to be mainly
lighting)
J: Is reserved for outside back (intended to be multi-zone watering)

M: is for development (M stands for "Macro".)

Gives me space to expand each zone a reasonable amount without adding a
house code, and means that I can control the _whole_ master bedroom
suite from an "old - single-house-code" receiver and my Pronto.

Control is Homevision / IR receivers+Pronto / PIRs and RF receiver, but
NOT Comfort.

I've allocated one house code per room with two consecutive house codes
"reserved" for the garage (AV Room when I get round to doing it)
as I
expect
to have quite a few devices needed in there.

There are some housecodes which I know won't be fully utilised (one
housecode is allocated to the airing cupboard for example) and in those
cases I *could* merge "roomcodes" so that the stairway/landing,
airing
cupboard and bathroom all share one housecode but even doing it with all
rooms seperate I still have a complete housecode for the loft, another
for
anything outside and another for testing purposes and still a couple
spare
so there should be enough for everything.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet with one Worksheet per housecode (roomcode)
and
each device logged in the spreadsheet. Each entry in the spreadsheet has
the
module type (AD/LD/AW/LW), whether the device is an input or an output
(so
that I don't have to remember the module types from the codes as I have
a
bad memory for product codes), whether it supports dimming or not and
how
many modules are using that address (for example in my computer room I
have
two lamp modules sharing an address).

It's very easy to lose track of what modules you have at what addresses!
