We're all fairly logical on this list so:

A 600 dpi inkjet (3 colours CMY), actually prints at a resolution of 200
lpi
(lines per inch - a typesetters convention).

Unless you want your printer driver to do the interpolation - which they
aren't very good at - you should always size your final image to this
resolution.

High end image editing programs like Photoshop, do have intelligent
resizing
algorithms, but again image resolution is lost if you increase picture size
by more than about 20%.

The big advantage with digital photography is that you tend to take far
more
pictures than you would with film, and be more selective in terms of what
you print (much like enthusiatic amatuers and pros do with film). As a
result when you do print, you tend to want larger size prints.

I'm sure before long 3mp will be available in the IXUS form factor. Just
think carefully before you plump for a 2mp camera as to what size prints
you
really want. Of course if all you want to do is store pictures on the PC
and
use it to "show slides" then 2mp is more than adequate.

Don't delete the orginal image from your hard drive once the ink has dried
on the print. The ink (and paper) used in inkjets does have a limited life,
and photos will fade over time when subjected to UV light (though the
manufacturers are working on this)
