driver
listed but they all said things like "NE2k - RealTech XXX" etc. None
of
them with 3Com. Should some of these work? Will give it a try
tonight when I'm back home.

The 3c509 is supported by Linux, I have used one before.
the driver you want is called "ne2k", the trusty old NE2000
driver.
