All circuits (lighting, ring main etc) are commoned at the consumer
unit/distribution board, so it sounds like your X10 is being attenuated by
an appliance somewhere.  Phil Harris has a 6-way power strip and one of the
socket outlets is "deaf" to X10... go figure.

Some people have had success with an X10 mains filter, and I believe if you
purchase one from LetsAutomate, Mike will refund you if it doesn't cure the
problem.  Li at Laser may offer them too.

My impression is that an X10 coupler is only necessary if you have more
than
one phase on your incoming supply.  Unlikely in most, normal domestic
situations.
