RE: projector bulbs

Most of the LCD and DLP projectors I have come across DONT use Halogen
lamps. Halogen lamps have a filament and give an intense source of light.

Most Non-CRT projectors use some form of Metal Halide or Xenon Arc lamp
which give an incredibly intense light source in a small bulb. To achive
that light level from a flourecscent light source would require a huge
light
source. These lamps are typically FROM £200 upwards :-(

I have used a variety of LCD/DLP projectors and have yet to find one where
the lamplife achieved is anywhere near the makers claim.

CFL is used for BACKLIGHTING because the size of the CFL lamp, although
quite large, is still smaller than the 14" LCD in front of it. In a
projector the LCD/DLP tablets are often less than 3" in size.

It also takes less light for direct viewing of an LCD than it does for any
form of projection.

If you want this for Home Theatre, save up for a bit longer and buy a good
secondhand CRT. Higher upfront cost but then no expendature on parts for
>10000 hours. I look after some that have just completed their 12th
summer
season in a local pub where that are on for 12 hours per day April to
October. They are still on the original tubes! By comparison an LCD (the
best have a quoted lamplife of 2000 hours) would need a new lamp every 166
days at least.
