I use Krone blocks with patch panels. All CAT5 is terminated in
wall ports and comes back to a patch panel at node zero. From the patch
panel I connect to a pair of switches for the LAN, but everything else
goes through Krone blocks.
For example I have ISDN2e for phone (no analogue at all), this
feeds in to a terminal adapter that has three analogue ports (mapped using
MSN). One of these ports is patched straight to a fax modem and is
the fax line. The second (business line) goes direct to the
Krone blocks where it is split into 5 CAT5 cables, each terminated with an
RJ45 connector, these can be plugged in to the patch panel allowing me to
put a business phone at any 5 wall ports. The third analogue port on the
terminal adapter is passed in to the Comfort alarm system, giving Comfort
phone control, it is also my home phone, from Comfort it goes back in to
the Krone blocks and is split into 5 CAT5 cables for patching (again
giving up to 5 home phone ports).
Another example is Comfort Keypads, at the moment I have three of
these installed (there are another three in a box waiting to be installed)
and they all need to connect to the same ports on the Comfort board.
Rather than try to squeeze up to six wires in to each connector, I have a
single CAT5 coming from the Keypad connections on the main board and
passing in to the Krone blocks, this is then split in to 6 patch leads
which can then pass in to the patch panel. So once more I am able to
position keypads at any wall port and patch through at node
zero.
I am doing similar with CCTV cameras and IR
distribution.
The real advantage of Krone blocks for me is the ability to easily
split and combine CAT5 cables, it allows me to have almost* all of my
wiring entirely structured and device independent. *I say almost because I
do have some shielded 8 core alarm cable going to some ports (usually one
of four in each bedroom, the office, the kitchen, hall and
lounge).
One of these days I will get everything finished and documented and
photographed and up on my web site, but right now I have to go back to
preparing for my daughters Halloween party.

Ah that makes sense.
As I am still playing with non-permanent things
I am routing mine into wall outlets.
Notes taken, thanks.

All the
"sockets" in the house are, as you say, punched down into patch
panels.
All the
remaining "control" cables go to the krones. These cables are
mostly in the wall at high level around the house. I have two for
example beside every light switch, other go to curtains, CCTV
etc.
This
allows me to quickly connect say an IR distribution system into these
cables.

Hi Mark, what are the Krone blocks used
for?
I thought you link the wall outlets into
the patch-panel as in an office environment, I can not think where
those Krone block come into the grand scheme?
Looks good though,
B.
> That's a lot of
work/kit! but one has the feeling all is not yet in
there?
> Lots of spare power
sockets......
James added all those power sockets you see - there
for "future expansion"
;-)
> Keep us informed,
with pickies?
OK...here's some more
info...
