As I am still playing with non-permanent things I am routing mine into wall outlets.

All the "sockets" in the house are, as you say, punched down into patch panels.
 
All the remaining "control" cables go to the krones.  These cables are mostly in the wall at high level around the house. I have two for example beside every light switch, other go to curtains, CCTV etc.
 
This allows me to quickly connect say an IR distribution system into these cables.

Hi Mark, what are the Krone blocks used for?
 
I thought you link the wall outlets into the patch-panel as in an office environment, I can not think where those Krone block come into the grand scheme?
