Hello everyone,
I'm the one responsible for filling your mailboxes with junk over the past
number of days. I've been hit by mail storms like thisb efore myself so I
know what it's like. I'm really sorry to anyone who received a mail
directly or indirectly. I can assure everyone it won't happen again.
For those of you who just wanted an apology stop here. For those who want
to know what happened read on.
I use the same mail client in work as at home on my laptop. As well as
work
based mail I also use it as a universal inbox for faxes and personal pop3
accounts. A PA in work has proxy access to mym ailbox which means she can
view my appointments etc. This particularp erson has just learned how to
set up email rules. I was out of theo ffice. A rule was set up without my
knowledge. I should have been OK as my office account does not pull down
my
pop3 mails which is where I get my UKHA mails from...........however while
at home I decided to download my pop3 mails. Had not downloaded ukha mails
for a week so there were hundreds!! Everything still OK as the rule was
not
active on my laptop.....however I then synced all my pop3 mails on my
laptop
with my universal inbox in work and without my knowledge the rule kicked in
at the work end and started to pour out mails directly in response to every
mail from the ukha group (and everyone else who sent me mail!!). This
explains why the mails seemed to be coming from someone who is not
registered on the group (came form work acct. rather than my personal
acct.). It also explains why some of you received mails in response to
posts you made before the date outlined in the rule (I downloaded approx. a
weeks worth in the one go).
Needless to say I arrived into work again yesterday to my mailbox
overflowing with abuse from angry people!!! I am now spending time
apologising to all and sundry (while a PBX I am responsible for serving
250p
eople has lost all it's primary rate ISDN's - more abuse). What have I
done
to deserve this???
Sorry for being so long winded but I reckoned those of you who received so
much junk deserved an explanation. If you're not interested in apologies
you can spam me!!
The one lesson to learn from this is never let anyone else who does not
know
what they are doing have access to your email account, particularly if you
have copies of your mailbox on a number of machines in a number of
locations.
Once again heartfelt apologies. I am not a plonker! Needless to say
action
has been taken to ensure this type oft hing does not happen
again...................!!!!
Rgds,
Brin Sheridan
PS Can I get up off my knees now.....this whole thing is so bloody
embarrassing. I have threatened my own internal email users in work with
termination of their email accounts for doing something similar.
Also I will let Mark know by "non-junk" mail the address I used
to register
for the group.
