The european basemap on the eTrex cover all Motorways, A and major B roads.
The UK Metroguide (expensive at =A380) takes it down to 99% of all roads.
Although the 8Mb memory only allows you to load part of the country at this
level (UK is split into about 8 parts).
It doesn't provide any real navigation aid like turn right etc. or tell you
which roads to take. SWMBO found it useful though while we were in France
as it allows you to locate where you are and you can zoom in and out to
check the junction coming up is the right one. The display is a little
small to really use while driving alone as you need to take your eyes of
the road too much. I use it when I'm out on my mountain bike which is why
I got the map version. I haven't linked it up to Autoroute yet but would
go for that approach in the car.
It is very useful though when you get close to a place though and can't
quite find somewhere. With the metroguide for your current area loaded you
can enter a house number and road and it finds it on the map.

Thanks for the replies so far but I am appealing to all the other gadget
junkies out there. :-)
I am thinking of buying a=A0GPS unit. (mainly for replacing the wife for
navigating on trips.)
There looks like there are 3 different levels (prices)
1. Simple (cheap) unit - no map but can hook up to laptop (Phil's
Solution) or Epod
2. Integrated basemap - How good is the base map? would it be any use in
the car by itself?
3. Downloadable maps - (Expensive, also need map CD-ROMs & memory) no
need
for laptop though.
4. Sony streetmate - =A3180 at www.gpsw.co.uk=A0( thanks for the link
Stev=
e) -
still need laptop but more of=A0 a "sat-nav" solution.
I think No.1 is the best solution but I would like to hear anyone else's
experiences.

I have an eTrex Legend, the one with a map display, it comes with a
European basemap on it.=A0 I've been very pleased with it.
Check out - www.gpsw.co.uk - The GPS Warehouse, overnight delivery, I've
used them a couple of times and service is very good.

Phil, why did you choose the Etrex?
Does Anyone else have any recommendations for a GPS unit?
