Re: GPS WAS Locations, an idea.

I use the Garmin 12XL with a connector to the laptop & Autoroute2000 when driving.
12XL with a handle bar bracket when out cycling (download the data to PC afterwards)
12XL in pocket / rucksac when out hiking (download data to PC afterwards)

I find when driving that it is a 'reasonable' configuration (can see next turn off etc coming up on the map, can see just how close I am when getting to my destination).  However, you should bear in mind that if you are in a city, coverage can be patchy and can fail at just the wrong moment.  Also, the laptop on the passenger seat can be difficult to read in very sunny weather.

(the 12XL is a fairly basic GPS, it does have the position of quite a few key cities in its data base (have not used this facility, other than out of curiosity on the train))

Thanks for the replies so far but I am appealing to all the other gadget junkies out there. :-)

I am thinking of buying a GPS unit. (mainly for replacing the wife for navigating on trips.)
There looks like there are 3 different levels (prices)
1. Simple (cheap) unit - no map but can hook up to laptop (Phil's Solution) or Epod
2. Integrated basemap - How good is the base map? would it be any use in the car by itself?
3. Downloadable maps - (Expensive, also need map CD-ROMs & memory) no need for laptop though.
4. Sony streetmate - £180 at www.gpsw.co.uk ( thanks for the link Steve) - still need laptop but more of  a "sat-nav" solution.

I think No.1 is the best solution but I would like to hear anyone else's experiences.

I have an eTrex Legend, the one with a map display, it comes with a
European basemap on it.  I've been very pleased with it.

Check out - www.gpsw.co.uk - The GPS Warehouse, overnight delivery, I've
used them a couple of times and service is very good.

Phil, why did you choose the Etrex?
Does Anyone else have any recommendations for a GPS unit?
