I've got a Magellan 315 which falls into category 1. I use it mainly green-laning in the Landy, but sometimes link it to the laptop.

Make sure you get one that does OS map co-ordinates. The Magellans below the 315 only give Lat/Long which is a pain in the arse to cross-reference against a map.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for the replies so far but I am appealing to all the other gadget junkies out there. :-)

I am thinking of buying a GPS unit. (mainly for replacing the wife for navigating on trips.)
There looks like there are 3 different levels (prices)
1. Simple (cheap) unit - no map but can hook up to laptop (Phil's Solution) or Epod
2. Integrated basemap - How good is the base map? would it be any use in the car by itself?
3. Downloadable maps - (Expensive, also need map CD-ROMs & memory) no need for laptop though.
4. Sony streetmate - £180 at www.gpsw.co.uk ( thanks for the link Steve) - still need laptop but more of  a "sat-nav" solution.

I think No.1 is the best solution but I would like to hear anyone else's experiences.
