1. Simple (cheap) unit - no map but can hook up to laptop (Phil's Solution) or Epod
[Mike Griffiths] The amount of leads and Batteries makes this system interesting!! Useful if you're Off roading getting out of the car, I used it with great success following Offa's Dyke with a film crew

2. Integrated basemap - How good is the base map? would it be any use in the car by itself?
[Mike Griffiths] Only if you don't mind driving into lorries I used it once then went and bought a Carin system
3. Downloadable maps - (Expensive, also need map CD-ROMs & memory) no need for laptop though.

4. Sony streetmate - £180 at www.gpsw.co.uk ( thanks for the link Steve) - still need laptop but more of  a "sat-nav" solution.

I think No.1 is the best solution but I would like to hear anyone else's experiences.

I have an eTrex Legend, the one with a map display, it comes with a
European basemap on it.  I've been very pleased with it.

Check out - www.gpsw.co.uk - The GPS Warehouse, overnight delivery, I've
used them a couple of times and service is very good.

Phil, why did you choose the Etrex?
Does Anyone else have any recommendations for a GPS unit?
