Agreed, a DMZ would be an ideal solution but does add yet another box to
the
setup!  I have considered VPNs but Im not aware of any VPN clients for
winCE
and im not convinced they would have the processing power necessary. 
Unless
of course you know different, in which case Im all ears ;-0

p/s wonders how much running an epod is really going to cost once hes
finished building a complete infrastructure for it.. ;-)

Stick a firewall in - put the wireless on a DMZ - restrict access from the
DMZ to your home network (green side)
and your internet access (red side).

Assign static IP addresses for all wireless devices - and use these in your
firewall policy.

Use ssh and ssl. (or maybe even an IPSEC VPN solution FreeSWAN for Linux ??
in fact smoothwall looks ideal for this)
