It is just the pad.  I have some heat sink compound from the 486 over clocking days somewhere :-)
 
The price of some of those fan is incredible.  You can pay 40 quid for one - about half what the CPU cost!

What do you have between the the heatsink and the CPU? If you have one of
those thermal pads you will get much better results with a very thin layer
of Artic Silver instead. Check out www.overclock.co.uk

Will try with case on.  The fan that came with it is a aluminium job.
Presume copper ones are better?
