I'm in IT recruitment myself (not across the board, but almost
exclusively recruiting technical software engineering personnel) and
I can tell you it's tough out there, both for people looking for jobs
and for the recruiters. It wasn't great in the months prior to
Sepember 11th, but since then panic seems to have set in and there's
very few jobs coming up. Advice, if you're in a job, bear with it for
as long as you can. If you're not, use your contacts in the industry
as best you can.
Without wanting to do myself out of any much needed fees, many
companies are favouring those applying directly (who can blame
them?). Personally I wouldn't register with more than 3 or 4 well
chosen agencies - there's a danger in your CV being sent out
indiscriminately, and I don't think it looks good if it arrives at
the same company from a number of different agents. Also, put a lot
of effort into creating a clear and concise CV - I recommend you keep
it to less than 3 pages - (its surprising how many poorly presented
CVs there are about and they will often be overlooked).
My guess is that we're likely to be in a short but very severe period
of cutbacks, and hopefully in a few months things will start moving
forward again.
Anyway if anyone wants any further advise, please ask.
BTW, re location, I'm in Berkshire.
Good luck!
Nick
