RE: Underfloor heating

Hi,
It is possible to simply clip the plastic UFH pipes to the underneath of
existing floorboards, but there are several problems that this also
generates, such as how do you route the pipes through the existing joists
(depends upon access etc), how do you insulate below (you can buy
pre-grooved insulation that will slot between regularly spaced joists, and
also thermal mass.  Thermal mass, IMHO, is a real requisite for UFH, as the
heat is gradually transferred into the thermal mass, e.g. concrete, and is
then slowly and evenly released. This does, however, mean that it is slow
to
react (but given a decent monitoring and control system - ideally with some
form of automation ! e.g. HomeVision or an intelligent controller e.g.
DCD).

Another problem is the wood, which may not react quite as you might wish -
the heat drying, warping and generally not reacting well with the wood.
I've got UFH in concrete/flagstones, but many people have installed UFH
under wood.

If you're going to retain some rads, and have a mixed system (UFH + rads)
you'll need to think carefully about the temperature for the UFH component
and potentially mixing the UFH temp down.
