The TSOP1838 is a small component that demodulates 38kHz IR.  There's also
a
TSOP1856 version (amongst others) which demodulates 56kHz IR.

Because it is sensitive to a specific frequency range, it offers fairly
good
immunity to interference from other IR sources such as fluorescent lights.
