By "backups" I assume you mean "pirates".

As an alternative and completely legal suggestion, if you want try before
you buy why not play it in a store that allows you to or merely rent it for
a few pounds. Most video rental stores offer rental of both games and some
even the consoles themselves.

Another alternative and completely legal suggestion is to buy second hand.
You will usually get it much cheaper that way.

A final alternative and completely legal suggestion is merely wait a while
and the £40+ price tag will drop as the price of pretty much any product
drops over time.
