On LAN parties - and this is a serious suggestions for those of you with
kids.

I ran one with a mate for a friend of mine at his daughters' primary
school Christmas "fete" last year. (He was running another
stall.)

We chose Descent for three reasons:

- We could get away with older PCs
- The violence was more abstract, and less "blood and gore"
- It was unlikely to be dominated by the one or two kids who had played
it at home a lot

We charged, I think, =A32 for 10 minutes, and put up a big poster that
read "Play against your friends." We had 5 PCs - 4 for the kids,
and one
for us as a "management station".

It was a big hit - we had queues of kids lined up, and halfway through
the morning, got a note from the PTA treasurer asking us to increase the
charges (which I ignored!)

It didn't actually raise a huge amount of money compared to the other
stalls which sold "stuff" BUT it has the big advantage of being a
sort
of magnet that kept in a single room all the kids who were expected to
be rowdy and disruptive and cause trouble around the fete. Also, with us
being youngish blokes in jeans, the kids were less inclined to "try it
on" with us than they were with people of the "parent or
teacher" age
group!
