Nooooooo. You should not standardise on one type of images. jpg should be
used
for photo's and images with lots of colour and shades. gif's should only be
used for things like buttons, with a limited amount of colours, say 16 or
so.
With jpgs, you cannot restrict the colour palette and the compression is
optimised for using 16m colours.
With Gifs you CAN restrict the colour palette and the header of the file
says
which colours are being used, then if you are using black white and red in
a
button, you are only using 3bits per pixel. This way we get some of our
buttons
on our websites down to around 100bytes!
I gave my sister a crash course on this. She had some photos on her website
as
gifs and the were about 850kb, when I converted them to jpgs got them down
to
about 120kb, still big, but it's not going to bugger modem users.
I could go on but...
Now for the b&q site.
Page weight is fine, about 40kb, big but should not be taking that long to
download.
The only things that could be making this page load so slowly are:
Limited Bandwidth (either physically or server related).
Backend (i.e. Databases)
if you have plenty of bandwidth and the servers are not overloaded and
things
are still looking bad, check the optimisation of the backend DB.
I am assuming all the lefthand nav and the content in center are driven by
a
cms of some description.
I managed to optimise the home page of www.ecardsforyou.co.uk from taking
about
20sec down to .25sec for the first page impression.
These speeds are all render time at the webserver, not physical download to
a
browser of course, some poor soul still using a 1.44k modem will still be
waiting some time. :-)
