You dont need any software to make a connection (with any version of Windows). Just the built in stuff.

The other question - does it work with Windows 2000. The FAQ says "dial
tech support on...", but that number's barred from my phone.

Hi All,

Several people in my office are now using V21 http://www.v21.co.uk/
as their ISP. Anyone here tried it ?

Initial reports in the office seem to indicate that the service is
reliable.
