I'm actually a fan of 5400 rpm drives .... if you're lobbing them in a server then they don't have to be screamingly fast and IDE RAID is quite effective at upping data rates if you're that bothered.

The one thing that I really do like about 5400 rpm drives is:

1) They're quieter. I have a 7,200rpm Seagate Barracuda 40Gb drive in my server that in isolation is quiet but when screwed into the drive racks in my server chassis it makes the whole unit resonate - because of that it's sitting unrestrained on top of the CD ROM drive.

2) They run cooler ... far cooler ... which means there is less need for noisy fans. My server has 3 fans in addition to the PSU fan and you can hear it running downstairs.

10,000 rpm SCSI drives run so damn hot you can't keep your hand on them!

I have the 5,400 rpm Maxtor 100Gb IDE drive and it is superb. Quiet, cool running and certainly fast enough for my needs ... I'm wanting to buy another three once I find gainfull employment and span across them to give me a single 400Gb (actually about 380Gb) drive for MP3's and video clips.

Consider DDR RAM (you seem to need an AMD or SIS735 chipset to take full advantage of this thought). See last weeks posts on the subject.

I have the 5400 RPM version of the IBM 40 gig and it seems good so far.

Must have 1 ISA slots for my serial extender card

Any comments on cases and PSU

The scan one for �35 seems cheap wats the catch ?

They also have an aluminium one for �169 so I’m a bit confused

or can someone recommend a good newsgroup for PC builds etc
