"Obvious problems with this method would be light level changes in
the room and people moving stuff around."

Problem! could be great for getting SWMBO to stop the damned obsession with
changing the room round for any damned reason, why oh why do they always
seem to choose the least cabled up areas for the TV, Hifi etc...

On motion detection software like Gotcha you have the option to detect
movement by either comparing to the last frame or the start frame. Doing
something similar you could get the camera to take a picture of the room
empty and compare it with the current image to determine if anything has
changed. Obvious problems with this method would be light level changes in
the room and people moving stuff around.

Don't know the practicalities of this but if you had a camera in a room
could you not use software to tell if someone was moving=A0around or even
just sitting on the sofa. I know motion detection software is available
but=A0this would not help=A0when sitting still, the system could know
what=
an
empty sofa looks like so=A0work out=A0if someone was on it.

Any thoughts or should I shut up.
