Nick,
I agree that small bookshelf speakers, mounted on discrete brackets are
a far more cost-effective solution that "in-ceiling" speaker,
particularly when you take into account the fact that second-hand
bookshelf speakers are in my view, very good value.
Two nice thing about buying second-hand speakers:
- 1: they have very obvious failure modes - either they work, or they're
knackered and you can tell immediately.=20
- 2: the rate of technology change in the market is relatively slow.
At the end of the day, you have to determine the premium you're prepared
to pay for a completely in-wall/in-ceiling installation...
For example, in Loot today:
- Rogers LS55s - =A3100
- Linn Keilih - =A3400
BTW Phil - there's a blinding offer today 565 7.1 processor AND Rotel
985THX power amp for =A31500 the pair...

I'm using Jamo speakers in kitchen/breakfast room ceiling, about 7=20
inch diameter, white grill so very unobtrusive and sound good - cost=20=20
approx =A3180 for pair. However I know I could have spent a lot less=20
but the quality & power handling wouldn't have been there...
I also know there's relatively little choice for specialist ceiling=20
speakers so, for the same quality, you're probably spending more than=20
on a set of bookshelf speakers. Sorry no experience of using car=20
audio speakers but I reckon its worth a try..
